Nutra as the name suggests is the next big thing waiting to explode in the Nigerian music scene.
This musical duo is undoubtedly gifted and versatile as they are apt to leave you spellbound
with their awesome vocal power. Their brand of music is a varying cross between R&B and Popular music.
Call their style of music R&B, Pop or Hip Hop, what stands out is their ability to create music
with great melodies that would sway the mind of the most cynical of critics.
The duo namely Oluwasegun Lawrence Alumu (aka QB) and Ofulue Emmanuel Ikenna (aka Spyke) have
long been childhood friends dating back some fifteen years ago. Oluwasegun Alumu (aka QB)
was born in Akoko area of Ondo state to Mr. & Mrs. Alumu on March 3, 1985. QB which stands
for Quincy Brown has long displayed an uncanny love for music and singing since age 9
while attending New Mainland Children School and later C.M.S Grammar School in Bariga
area of Lagos State. Since then, he never looked back as he constantly worked harder
to nurture and develop his singing ability. He points to the likes of Michael Jackson,
Prince, R. Kelly, Boyz II Men, Usher, Justin Timberlake as some of his mentors and musical
influences. While is high school, he met friends who also shared in his passion for music.
In no time he was forming one band after another starting with a band known as "Restless Teens"
which later changed to "Harmony Teens" because of the negative connotation of the word "Restless".
Harmony Teens was later changed to "Black Survivals" which later broke up, and in its place came the
new band known as "Ziblin" QB is quick to mention Harold Ettah as the person who helped nurture and
harnessed his musical talent. He refers to Harold Ettah as a pure and rear genius.
Ofulue Ikenna (aka Spyke) was born in Lagos on April 15, 1983. Spyke did not have any music career in mind
as a young child attending Santa Maria Private School in Alaka Estate in Lagos. All that later change when
he attended Baptist Academy which was popularly known as "Baptacad". While at Baptacad, he engaged in various
social activities including singing and dancing which was to later become his life long journey and pastime.
Spyke’s love for music pushed him harder to learn more about this art. This quest made him learn the skills of
composing music and production. No wonder these days he prides himself as music composer/producer, song writer
and instrumentalist as he also plays guitar. He takes some credits today haven produced numerous Nigerian artists
namely Faze and others.
Destiny as they say have a way of fulfilling itself, as the musical path of Spyke and QB was to later coalesce at
Vocal Plus, a music institute managed by the legendary vocalist Harold Ettah. Under the guidance and tutoring of
Harold Ettah, the duo of QB and Spyke began to see a whole new world of music. The many lectures and training they
received at Vocal Plus helped them to rediscover and reinvent themselves in preparation for their music careers.
They give Harold a lot of credit for the many ways they can play with their voice. While attending Vocal Plus,
the duo and some other school mates formed a band known as "Ziblin". Today, Spyke and QB are the only two surviving
"Ziblin" band members still doing music. Working with Harold Ettah and other artists in the studio gave the duo
invaluable technical experience, and prepared them for their bright not-too-distant future
QB and Spyke are constantly working hard and finding new ways to improve their skills and advance their career in music.
If the songs they have recorded so far like "Way You Are" and "Never Leave You Alone" is any indication of their talent
and passion for music, watch out, for the best is yet to come. According to them, "We can come from any angle, be it Pop,
R&B, Easy Rock, just name it. We're just making sure that we’re felt in the streets as much as on the soulful level,"
QB and Spyke rapidly burgeoning music career led to their inking with Oddruff Inc. a Nigerian/Canadian record label,
whose rich R&B, Pop and Hip Hop history made it the ideal home for their unique blend of music. According to Ayo
Jos-Ogbebor, President Oddruff Records, "The duo have the voice, the songs, the intelligence, the soul, and the
charisma of true stars." "With "Nutra", there's no doubt you're getting the best of both worlds"
Coming from ardent Christian families with disciplined upbringing, the duo firmly believes that to whom much is given,
much is also expected. They believe that honesty and sincerity of purpose should be the guiding principles of human
relations.
QB and Spyke see themselves as leaving their mark in the international music scene in the not too distant future.
In their words, "We're striving to be that Nigerian band that is going to win the most prestigious of international
music awards".
